Luke 1:1–4

“Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.”

That You May Have Certainty

Luke writes his Gospel so that we can stand with confidence on the truth of Jesus in a world full of noise and doubt, and step forward together with bold faith, generous giving, and a shared mission to make Him known.

I. The Weight of Many Stories vv. 1–2
II. The Work of Careful Investigation v. 3

The Gospel of Luke part 1: Luke 1:1–4
That You May Have Certainty

Introduction
Luke begins his Gospel with a preface. He wants Theophilus, and us, to know that the story of Jesus is reliable, investigated, and true, so that we may have certainty in a world full of competing voices.

Introductory Questions
1. Where in life do you most need certainty right now?
2. Can you think of a time when you trusted the wrong story or the wrong voice? What happened?

Into the Text
3. Read Luke 1:1–2. Why does Luke begin by saying “many have undertaken to draw up an account”? What does that tell us about the world then and now?
4. Why does it matter that Luke bases his Gospel on eyewitnesses? How does this strengthen our trust in the message of Jesus?
5. Read Luke 1:3. Luke describes his work as “carefully investigated” and “orderly.” How does this shape your view of the Christian faith?
6. Luke writes to Theophilus by name. What does this personal address show us about the way God deals with people?
7. Read Luke 1:4. What kind of “certainty” does Luke want Theophilus to have? How is gospel certainty different from human arrogance or stubbornness?

Apply the Text
8. If Luke wanted to give Theophilus certainty, what would it look like for you to grow in certainty about Jesus this year?
9. How does certainty in Jesus free us to give generously and serve boldly as a church?
10. What is one way you can help someone else come to know Jesus more clearly and confidently this autumn?
