Isaiah 2:2–5

“It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be lifted up above the hills; and all the nations shall flow to it, and many peoples shall come, and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide disputes for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord.”

4 :1 And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” And Jesus answered him, “It is written,

“‘You shall worship the Lord your God,
and him only shall you serve.’”

And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written,

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
    to guard you,’

11 and

“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

12 And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”13 And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.

True obedience always flows from true identity and Satan’s goal is always to distort identity so that obedience collapses.

I. Led into the Wilderness vv 1-2
II. Tested as the Son vv 3-12
III. Victorious in Obedience v 13

Introduction
1. Can you share about a recent situation where you felt pulled between doing what you wanted and doing what you knew was right. What made that moment difficult.
2. Why do you think temptation often feels strongest after spiritual highs, important decisions, or moments of clarity in faith.

Into the Text
3. Luke 4:1 tells us that Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit and led by the Spirit into the wilderness. What does this show us about God’s purpose in seasons of testing, and how does it challenge the idea that hardship means God has left us.
4. In Luke 4:3 Satan begins with the words, “If you are the Son of God.” How does this directly connect to the Father’s words in Luke 3:22, and what does this reveal about how temptation often attacks our identity before it attacks our behavior.
55. In the first temptation Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 8:3 about living by God’s Word. What does this teach us about how Jesus defines real life and real security, and how does that challenge the way we usually seek comfort or control.
6. In Luke 4:5–7 Jesus is offered power and authority without suffering. What makes this temptation so appealing, and where do you see similar shortcuts offered in our culture today around success, influence, or recognition.
7. Luke 4:13 says the devil leaves until an opportune time. What does this teach us about the pattern of temptation in the Christian life, and how does Hebrews 4:15 encourage us when temptation returns.

Application
8. The sermon emphasized that obedience flows from identity. How does remembering that you belong to Christ change the way you face temptation, guilt, or fear this week.
9. When you feel pressure, failure, or spiritual weakness, what usually shapes your view of yourself more, your emotions or the gospel. What would it look like in very practical terms for you to look to the cross first this week.
