46 And Mary said,

“My soul magnifies the Lord,
47     and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.
    For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me,
    and holy is his name.

Our welcome team members will pass an offering basket during this song.

21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

23 Jesus, when he began his ministry, was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli, 24 the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph, 25 the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai, 26 the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Josech, the son of Joda,27 the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri, 28 the son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmadam, the son of Er, 29 the son of Joshua, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, 30 the son of Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim, 31 the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David, 32 the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Sala, the son of Nahshon, 33 the son of Amminadab, the son of Admin, the son of Arni, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah, 34 the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor, 35 the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shelah, 36 the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech, 37 the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalaleel, the son of Cainan, 38 the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.

Jesus receives His identity from the Father so He can restore ours.

I. The Identity Declared by the Father vv 3:21-22
II. The Identity Jesus Shares With Humanity vv 3:23-37
III. The Identity Adam Lost, Jesus Restores vv 3:38

Introduction
1. Can you share a time when someone misunderstood your identity or assumed something about you that was not true? How did it make you feel?
2. Why do you think people today struggle so deeply with questions of identity and belonging?

Into the Text
3. In Luke 3:21–22, what do you notice about the Father’s declaration over Jesus? What does this reveal about Jesus’ identity before His ministry begins?
4. Why is it significant that Jesus stands among sinners in baptism, even though He has no sin? How does this help us understand His mission and His compassion?
5. When you look at the genealogy in Luke 3:23–37, what does the variety of names and stories show about the humanity Jesus enters? How does this deepen your understanding of the incarnation?
6. Luke takes the genealogy all the way back to Adam in Luke 3:38. Compare this with Romans 5:12–19. How does seeing Jesus as the “new Adam” help explain the difference between being in Adam and being in Christ?
7. What do you think Luke wants us to feel or realise by ending the genealogy with the phrase “the son of Adam, the son of God”? How does this set the stage for Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness?

Applying the Text
8. How should the truth that God declares believers His beloved children change the way we treat one another in the church?
9. In what ways do you still feel tempted to place your identity in your work, achievements, failures, or other people’s opinions? How does Luke 3 speak into that?
10. What would it look like this week to rest more fully in the identity you have received in Christ rather than striving to earn it?
