Isaiah 40:3–5
“A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.””

Our welcome team members will pass an offering basket during this song.

Introduction

1. Where have you seen “familiarity” cause you to overlook the significance of something or someone in your life? Think of routines, relationships, or truths that once stirred you but now feel “normal.”

2. Jesus says, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:21). How does the rest of Jesus’ ministry in Luke (or other Gospels) demonstrate Him fulfilling the promises of Isaiah 61—bringing good news to the poor, healing, freeing, restoring, and proclaiming God’s favor?

3. Why do the people of Nazareth begin by marveling at Jesus (v.22) yet quickly shift into skepticism and offense? What does this reveal about the human heart when confronted with the truth?

4. Jesus says, “No prophet is acceptable in his hometown” (24). Then he cites the stories of the widow of Zarephath and Naaman (25–27). Why are these two Gentiles highlighted? What do these examples show about God’s sovereign grace?

5. Where in your life are you tempted to treat Jesus with “familiarity” instead of reverence, trust, and surrender? How might God be inviting you to a fresh view of Christ this week?

6. Jesus’ ministry centers on those who recognize their spiritual poverty, bondage, blindness, and oppression. Where do you most clearly see your own spiritual need right now? How might bringing that before Jesus change how you approach Him this week?

7. The crowd wanted Jesus to prove Himself with miracles before they would believe. In what ways do we sometimes ask Jesus to “perform” before we trust Him? What would it look like for you to take a step of trust in who Jesus says he is without demanding more assurance?
