Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.
1. You’re Surrounded! (vs 1a)
2. So Let’s Get Ready and Go (vs 1b)
3. Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus (vs 2-3)
Introduction
1. Think about a situation or relationship in your life that has demanded patient endurance; perhaps a project, or a course of study or training, something else. What has helped you to “press on towards the finish.”
Into the Text
2. In verse 1a the author says that, “…we are surrounded by [a] great cloud of witnesses.” Look through the list of the people he is referring to in Chapter 11 about whom he says they were “commended for their faith” (11:39). How would you describe the faith of these old covenant saints and how might it provide motivation for us to persevere in our own?
3. Verse 1b. The author challenges his readers to “lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely.” What are some of the different things this text suggests about the nature of sin and how to combat it? How does what you find confirm or even challenge your understanding of sin?
4. It is widely accepted by both Christian and secular mental health clinicians that the problem of shame is at the root of most, if not all, of people’s presenting concerns. How might we describe the significance of the author’s statement in verse 2 that Jesus Christ literally “put shame to shame” when he went to the cross?
Apply the Text
5. Re-read verse 1a in the light of Romans 15:4. Do you have a plan for how you will engage with the Scriptures in the year to come?
6. Make a list of some of the things that tend to “hold you back” from living a life of faith in Christ with all your heart. How, very practically speaking, might you engage the help of a friend in your efforts to lay those things aside in the days and weeks to come?
7. What are some creative ways you could think of that would help you meditate on the truths of verse 2?
