37 On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. 38 And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out. It convulses him so that he foams at the mouth, and shatters him, and will hardly leave him. 40 And I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.” 41 Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.” 42 While he was coming, the demon threw him to the ground and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. 43 And all were astonished at the majesty of God. But while they were all marveling at everything he was doing, Jesus said to his disciples, 44 “Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.” 45 But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them, so that they might not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

We can’t. Jesus can. And Jesus does more.

Intro
1. Why is it difficult for us to admit, “I can’t,” especially in areas where we are normally capable?

Into the Text
2. Read Luke 9:37-40. What do you notice about the father’s situation and the disciples’ failure? Why is the sentence, “I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not,” so important to the passage?

3. Earlier in Luke 9 Jesus had given the disciples power and authority over demons. What does their failure here teach us about dependence on Christ, even when we have experience, ability, or previous success?

4. Read verses 41-43. What stands out about Jesus’ response to the father and the boy? What does “Bring your son here” reveal about both his authority and his compassion?

5. Verse 43 says that everyone was astonished at “the majesty of God.” How does this scene in the valley connect with the revelation of Christ’s glory on the mountain immediately before it?

6. Read verses 43-45. Why does Jesus speak about being delivered into the hands of men at the very moment everyone is amazed by his power? What does the cross show us that the miracle alone cannot?

Apply the Text
7. Where in your life are you presently reaching the end of what you can fix, control, or understand? What would it mean practically to bring that situation to Christ?

8. The sermon argues that Jesus does more than simply solve the immediate problems we bring to him. How does the cross reshape what we expect from Jesus and what it means to trust him when circumstances do not change?
