28 Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white. 30 And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure,[a] which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33 And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said. 34 As he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, my Chosen One;[b] listen to him!” 36 And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.
Jesus did not become glorious on the mountain; three men were finally allowed to see the glory that had been his all along, so they could trust him on the road down.
I. The Glory Revealed vv 28-29
II. The Exodus Discussed vv 30-31
III. The Voice Heard vv 32-36
Introduction
1. Think of a time when you discovered something important about a person that had been true all along, but you had never really seen it before. How did it change the way you understood them?
2. Why is it often easier to trust Jesus when life seems to be going well than when following him feels costly, confusing, or disappointing?
Into the text
3. Read Luke 9:18-27 and 9:28-36. Why do you think Luke places the Transfiguration immediately after Jesus speaks about suffering, the cross, and discipleship? What does the mountain help the disciples understand?
4. Moses and Elijah speak with Jesus about his “departure,” or exodus, which he is going to accomplish at Jerusalem. What connections do you see between the Exodus story and what Jesus is about to do through his death and resurrection? How does this deepen the way you understand the cross?
5. Peter wants to build three shelters and preserve the moment. What do you think he gets right, and where does he misunderstand what is happening? Are there ways Christians today can make the same kind of mistake?
6. The Father says, “This is my Son, my Chosen One; listen to him.” Why do you think the command is to listen? In the context of Luke 9, what has Jesus been saying that the disciples are finding difficult to hear?
7. After seeing Jesus’ glory, the disciples still have to walk back down the mountain and continue toward Jerusalem. What does this teach us about the purpose of powerful spiritual experiences? How can they prepare us for ordinary faithfulness and difficult obedience?
Application
8. Where in your life right now is it hardest to trust Jesus because the road does not look the way you expected?
9. What voices most compete with Jesus for your attention, trust, or obedience?
10. What would it look like for you to “listen to him” in one concrete area of your life this week?
