“No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. 17 For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light. 18 Take care then how you hear, for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.”
19 Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. 20 And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.” 21 But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”
The passage calls us to hold out the light of Christ, hear his word with our whole heart, and discover that in doing so we have been gathered into his family forever.

1. In the introduction, Eustace (the character from the Chronicles of Narnia) slowly becomes a dragon without fully noticing it happening. Have you ever seen how what a person listens to, watches, loves, or gives attention to slowly shapes the kind of person they become?

2. Why do you think Jesus uses the image of a lamp on a stand in verse 16? What would it look like for a Christian to hide the light?
3. How does this passage connect to the Parable of the Sower in Luke 8:4–15? What does “good soil” hearing actually look like in everyday life?
4. Jesus says, “Take care how you hear.” Why is hearing God’s Word dangerous if we do not respond to it?
5. In verse 18, Jesus says some people can lose “even what he thinks that he has.” How can somebody slowly drift spiritually without noticing it happening?
6. Jesus says His true family are those who “hear the word of God and do it.” What does that teach us about Christian community and belonging?
